Sooke & Vancouver Island Area Activities
Sooke is an eco-tourist's dream. Explore the rugged coast line, watch out for eagles, whales and other wildlife. Our year-round mild climate means that outdoor activities can be enjoyed at all times.
Arts & Events
The area boasts many fine artists, who are happy to share their craft. Plan to attend the Sooke Fine Arts Show, which draws artists from all over Vancouver Island, at the end of July. Enjoy the Stinking Fish Studio Tour through East Sooke and Metchosin, when artists open their studios to the public. Take in one of the many wonderful performances of the Sooke Philharmonic Orchestra.
Hiking & Walking Trails
World-class hiking and walking trails abound — there is something for everyone! East Sooke Park is just a short walk from our doorstep or take advantage of our free drop-off and pick-up service. The more adventurous may wish to explore the 47 kilometer long Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, where you can observe the tidal pools of Botanical Beach as a day trip or embark on a multi-day hiking and camping trip along its entire length. The less adventurous can enjoy Roche Cove Park and Witty's Lagoon nearby, within a 15 minute drive.
Parks & Recreation
Bike or hike parts of the 55 km long Galloping Goose Trail that winds its way gently between Victoria and Leechtown. Matheson Lake is a great spot for fresh water fishing and swimming. The Sooke Potholes is also a great place to swim in the summer months of July and August, or watch the salmon spawn from October to December. Get geared up with Eagle Eye Wilderness Co.
Whale Watching, Sightseeing & Adventure
Admire the beautiful killer (orca) whales from the safety of a whale watching boat with Sooke Coastal Explorations. Try kayaking, canoeing or boating to admire local tidal life. Experience the thrill of a zipline adventure tour in the Sooke Hills. Go horseback riding on the beach or through the beautiful rainforest. Other activities include sailing, beachcombing, windsurfing and scuba diving.
Fishing
Salmon or halibut fishing is an exciting experience not to be missed. Charters are arranged for our guests with Norm Feil of Seagirt Fishing Charters aboard his 24' Beachcraft cabin cruiser (fully insured, equipped with modern electronics, toilet and safety equipment).
Golf
Enjoy a round of golf at the scenic Olympic View Golf Course in Metchosin or Bear Mountain Golf Course in Langford.
Spas & Wellness
Before going out for dinner or barbecuing your catch of the day, enjoy a relaxing massage or reflexology session at Goodlife Wellness Centre, Pure Elements Spa, Le Sooke Spa or the new Ocean Palm Spa, all a short drive away in Sooke.
Dining Out
There are many restaurants in the area ranging from home-style cooking at Mom's Café, My Chosin Café and Smokin' Tuna Café, pub fare at the 17 Mile House or Stone Pipe Grill to fine dining at Markus' Wharfside Restaurant, The Edge and the Sooke Harbour House.
Day Trips
In addition to local activities, enjoy a day trip around the Pacific Marine Circle Route up West Coast Road, through Port Renfrew, across to Cowichan Lake and back down the scenic Malahat Drive; to Victoria, the City of Gardens, including Butchart Gardens, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, and Royal BC Museum; Duncan, the City of Totem Poles; Chemainus, home of the murals; or one of Vancouver Island's many wineries.
